The objectives of this research are to identify types of directives speech acts uttered by Carmichael and Hansen in The Gray Man, to identify the techniques used by the translator in translating the utterances containing directive speech act spoken by two characters into the Indonesian subtitle, to identify the impact of the use of translation techniques on the presence or absence of shift in directive speech act types and the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability of the directive speech act spoken by the two characters in The Gray Man.

            It is descriptive qualitative research and single embedded case study. The sources of data are documents and informants selected by using purposive sampling. The source of data in a form of documents consist of the script and its Indonesian subtitle which were taken from a movie entitled The Gray Man while the informants are raters who provide data regarding the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The data are collected through content analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data are analyzed using Spradley’s data analysis technique which consists of domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis.

            The research findings show that there are 112 data in the form of utterances comprising directives speech acts found in Denny Carmichael and Lloyd Hansen’s utterances in The Gray Man. The most frequently identified types are requirements and questions (each comprises 46 data). There are 321 translation techniques used by the translator. The dominant translation technique is established equivalent (174 data). There are five data which undergo shifts in terms of type as a result of the use of the translation techniques. The translation quality of utterances comprising directives speech acts found in Denny Carmichael and Lloyd Hansen’s utterances in The Gray Man movie subtitle is high, with final score of 2.94.
