Rizka Yulvi Fadhilah. 2023. A TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF THE DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACTS IN IMPERATIVE SENTENCES IN THE ‘LIGHTYEAR’ MOVIE. Undergraduate Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta. Supervisor: Dr. Bayu Budiharjo, S.S., M. Hum.

This study focused in analysing the directive speech acts in imperative sentences in the movie Lightyear and its Indonesian translation. The research aimed to identify the types of directive speech acts, the translation techniques used, and their impact on translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The research methodology was descriptive qualitative research, using documents and selected raters through purposive sampling. The data analysed were directive speech acts in imperative sentences from Lightyear and its translations. The data were discussed with two raters through Focus Group Discussion to assess translation quality.

The analysis revealed 89 data on directive speech acts, classified into seven types: commanding (54%), forbidding (12%), inviting (12%), ordering (9%), requesting (8%), suggesting (2%), and warning (2%). The dominant type found was commanding that were said by a commander to his/her subordinates. The translator used 12 different techniques, with the established equivalent technique being the most frequently used. The translation technique of reduction used in this subtitle translation has caused shifts in several data. Overall, the Indonesian translation was considered accurate (average score of 2.87) and acceptable (average score of 2.99). The use of the reduction translation technique results in a reduced level of translation accuracy it can potentially shifts the meaning from the target language. Therefore, the translation of the directive speech acts in this research is accurate and preserves the meaning of the original text. It is also considered acceptable since only one datum identifies as less acceptable due to the use of the discursive creation technique. However, translation feels natural and the standards of the Indonesian language in terms of word choice.
