STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF GLOBAL ENGLISHES AND THEIR ATTITUDE TOWARD THE USE OF ENGLISH IN TEXTBOOKS. A Thesis. The aim of this research is to investigate Indonesian Students’ perception of English Varieties in the concept of Global Englishes and their attitude towards the use of English in English Textbooks at one university in Surakarta. The research questions answered in this research include: a) How do students perceive Global Englishes? b) How is students’ attitude toward the use of English in English textbooks? c) How is students’ performance in teaching and learning process?. This research used a qualitative case study. The participants of this research are 20 students of English education department who took part in the questionnaire survey, and four selected participants were chosen to do the interview. Triangulation was used to check the credibility of the data by cross-examine the questionnaire and interview results. The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model by Miles and Huberman (1994) through four stages: data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result showed that most students’ have a positive perception of English varieties. The result showed that: a) all the participants were knowledgeable of English Varieties. However, the participants agreed that Standard English remained important. Standard English was used in formal situations; meanwhile, other varieties of English used in informal situations. b) The pace of speaking, people’s first language, and word choice are factors that influence the degree of difficulty in understanding English. Nevertheless, the participants agreed that being proficient in English means being fluent when speaking English, using proper grammar, and having extensive English vocabulary. Moreover, this research indicates that: c) social media and friends interaction influence the participants’ interest in English. In addition, the result revealed that the participants had a positive attitude toward English used in English textbooks. The result revealed that: a) Textbooks are essential teaching materials, and standard English is enough as the only variety of English in the textbooks. However, supporting teaching materials were needed to complement the materials in teaching. b) The participants claimed they did not avoid introducing other varieties of English. Furthermore, c) most participants were selective in choosing teaching materials that used Standard English. This research emphasizes that students were roughly aware of many English varieties used in this world. However, they focused more on standard English. Besides, the role of the teacher was influential in the classroom. Teachers have the capacity to influence the students.
