The research was conducted based on the shifting learning from face-to-face to online learning during pandemic Covid-19. It becomes a new challenge especially in ELT classroom for both lecturer and students. The students need to concern about their autonomy in online learning because they studied from home and far from the lecturer. This study is aimed to find out: 1) how is the implementation of online learning in an ELT classroom amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and 2) how online learning works on university students' autonomous learning amid the Covid-19 pandemic. This research is a narrative inquiry research that uses questionnaire, interview, and document analysis as the data collection technique. The questionnaire was adapted from Macaskill and Taylor (2010) which measured two things: students’ independence and study habits. The subjects of this research are lecturer and three representative students. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, which revealed the outcomes as follows: 1) The implementation of online learning in an ELT classroom for university students amid the Covid-19 pandemic is merely the same as offline learning on campus. WhatsApp and Zoom are the media used in Academic Writing class which is carried out online using a handphone and laptop. The lecturer prepared, implemented, and evaluated the learning process. In this research, the lecturer and students did not find any significant problems in using the applications, but students have difficulties related to internet connection. 2) During the implementation of online learning, students had a low score in the aspect of independence in learning, which was 2.61, although the students achieved a better score in study habits. Students were not capable enough to be called autonomous learners who have good autonomy. So, it can be concluded that the students are in reactive autonomy level which still requires lecturers as facilitators in online learning. This research is expected to provide insight into how online learning enhances the students’ autonomous learning during the Covid-19.
