×
Language assessment literacy (LAL) is the comprehensive understanding of effective language assessment practices and the ability to apply this knowledge to evaluate and utilize language assessment outcomes across different settings. Research on in-service teachers' LAL performance indicates unsatisfactory results, prompting scholars to explore potential factors affecting LAL improvement. Studies report that experiential factor mediates in-service LAL development. However, the extent to which experiential factor influences in-service LAL development is underexplored. Therefore, the present study aimed at (1) eliciting the Indonesian EFL teachers’ stories about their experiences related to LAL and (2) elucidating to what extent the experiential factor influences the Indonesian EFL teacher’s LAL development.

This study was a narrative study involving two English teachers from different institutions. The data gathered through narrative frames, artifacts, and semi-structured interviews were analyzed through four steps, starting from collecting the data, selecting data in the data condensation stage, followed by presenting the data during the data display stage to ease the analysis, and finally, a conclusion was drawn based on the data. Ethical considerations were measured in all study aspects, including objectives, methodological design, study nature, data collection methods, beneficiaries, and data examination and dissemination.

The study found that the theories and skills learned through a language assessment course were the participants’ LAL foundation, which further improved through attending training related to language assessments and practicing and reflecting on their language assessment practices in their classes. The experiences attending a language assessment course built the participants' knowledge and skills in language assessments. The participants improved and developed LAL on specific elements concerning the training focus by attending training. Despite having a wide gap of years of teaching experience, both participants developed their LAL similarly. Similar educational degrees, positive attitudes toward assessments, and eagerness to improve their assessment practices contributed to the results. This study offers recommendations for language assessment educators, in-service teachers, schools, and future researchers.
