×
Adryan. EXPLORING PRE-SERVICE TEACHER’S IDENTITY DURING TEACHING PRACTICUM USING XU’S THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK. Thesis, Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Sebelas Maret, April 2023
The objectives of this study are (1) to investigate the way English as Foreign Language (EFL) Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) develop their identity during teaching practice based on Xu’s theoretical framework; (2) to reveal the influencing factors in shaping the EFL PSTs’ identities.
This study was carried out at one of Surakarta’s public universities. The participants were two female EFL PSTs in the seventh semester who had completed their teaching practice and finished their reports. This research used the biographical narrative inquiry method to gather data from in-depth interviews and artifacts from students’ lesson plans. The data, then, was analyzed under the thematic analysis method. The analysis is done by filtering the raw data, defining the filtered data, and coding the data into some categorization.
The results showed that EFL PSTs developed their identity during teaching practicum by prioritizing thorough lesson planning, ensuring students’ readiness before introducing new material, and emphasizing the importance of correct pronunciation. They value professionalism and believe they are responsible for providing accurate and comprehensive information to their students. They incorporating various assessment practices, creating an engaging and supportive classroom environment, integrating diverse learning media, and seeking and utilizing student feedback. Additionally, they prioritize building positive relationships with their students to promote academic success and positive student’s outcomes. Furthermore, the study revealed factors influencing EFL PST’s identity development, including past experiences, the content area of knowledge, and positive relationships with students. However, the study has three limitations: it only applies to the EFL context, relies on self-reported data, and doesn’t examine long-term effects.
