English Language and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Science, Universitas Sebelas Maret.</p><p> </p><p>Supervisor: Dr. Dyah Ayu Nila Khrisna, S.S., M.Hum.</p><p> </p><p>Conversational implicature is an intention contained in an utterance but not expressed directly. In that case, this research aims to: 1) investigate whether the translation of implicatures concentrates on the ST or reveals the explicit messages in TT. 2) determine the macro and micro levels of translation used in the translation of implicatures based on Skopos and Grice theories, and 3) assess target readers' understanding of the translation of implicatures and determine whether they enjoy reading novels with genuine implicatures or expressed messages. The data were selected from an English novel entitled One of Us is Lying and its translation Satu Pembohong. To measure translation readability, this research used two theoretical frameworks, namely Skopos and Grice theoriesin descriptive analysis. The results of the analysis show that most of the translation data were oriented to the source text. Four maxims based on the Grice principle were used in this novel. However, the messages and meanings of the implicatures can be well understood by the target readers. 0 (0%) of the data was rated as unreadable, and 25 (63.5%) were rated as readable, while 15 (17.5%) of the data were found less readable. This research concludes that these two theories can be used to measure the level of translation comprehensibility of texts containing implicatures from English to Indonesian.</p><p> </p><p>Keywords : Conversational implicature, Skopos, Grice’s maxim, translation, macro analysis, micro analysis.</p>
