A Thesis, Surakarta: Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University, December 2023.

The research discusses the experiences of three EFL pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy in writing thesis proposals. This research is essential to reconsider the condition of self-efficacy among pre-service teachers, the self-efficacy factors influencing writing thesis proposals, and how to develop those factors. This research used a narrative case study to present the findings. The three EFL pre- service teachers at the University of Surakarta were the research participants. The researcher collected the data through questionnaires, written guided reflection, interviews, and related artifacts. The interactive model analysis was implemented to analyze the data. The research revealed that 1) their different levels of self- efficacy affected their confidence and actions when writing a thesis proposal; 2) they encountered various writing situations that were influenced by self-efficacy factors, such as mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and physiological and affective states; and 3) while writing a thesis proposal, they gain actions to enhance their self-efficacy by cultivating the four factors of self-efficacy. This research suggests that EFL pre-service teachers are supposed to gain an awareness of their efficacy through this; they are required to improve self-efficacy to assist in completing and writing a thesis proposal. Lecturers are also expected to give EFL pre-service teachers opportunities to excel in writing assignments and assistance in acknowledging their achievements.

Keywords: self-efficacy, writing, thesis proposal, self-efficacy factors
