A Multimodal Text Analysis of Sexual Euphemisms in the Indonesian Version of the Lore Olympus Webcomic

× <p>This research focuses on the translation of sexual euphemisms in the Lore Olympus webcomic, aiming to identify their forms and functions, identify shifts in translation, and evaluate functional equivalence, acceptability, and readability, considering the multimodal nature of comics. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study utilized documents and informants, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved content analysis, questionnaire distribution, and focus group discussion, with two informants evaluating translation quality in terms of functional equivalence, acceptability, and readability.<br>The research findings show a total of 66 sexual euphemisms in the original text of Lore Olympus, with 63 data (95.45%) formed through semantic innovation, and 3 data (4.55%) formed through double classification. Breaking it down into subcategories, from the most frequent to the least frequent of sexual euphemism forms are particularization with 34 data (51.52%), implication with 20 data (30.30%), metaphor with 5 data (7.58%), understatement with 3 data (4.55%), and the minorities including metonym, compounding-metaphor, phoneme replacement-metaphor, and metaphor-implication, each with 1 data (1.52%). The functions identified are protective with 50 data (75.76%), provocative with 10 data (15.15%), and underhand and ludic, each constituting 3 data (4.55%). Furthermore, the shifts identified in the Indonesian translation include 6 data with shifts solely in form and 5 data with shifts in both form and function. The average penalty score of -0.12 in the functional equivalence area is a result of errors in both semantic and stylistic aspects, while the average penalty score of -0.01 in the acceptability area is attributed to errors in the idiomaticity aspect, and the average penalty score of -0.01 in the readability area is caused by an error in the graphics aspect. Despite the relatively small penalty scores in each area, the errors cannot be overlooked as some aspects exhibit serious severity. Therefore, further improvement in functional equivalence, acceptability, and readability in translating sexual euphemisms in the webcomic is necessary to minimize the severity of errors and enhance overall quality. <br>Translating sexual euphemisms, especially in webcomics like Lore Olympus, poses a complex challenge, with shifts in form and function impacting translation quality. Errors, predominantly in functional equivalence area, particularly in semantic and stylistic aspects, range from minor to serious. The study underscores the intricate relationship between form, function, and stylistic elements, emphasizing the translator&#39;s need to balance maintaining intended meaning, preserving stylistic elements, and ensuring cultural appropriateness, particularly in visually complex multimodal texts like webcomics.</p>
