MORAL VALUES IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN INDONESIA: A PRAGMATIC APPROACH

×<p>In the last decade, studies on the representation of moral values in English textbooks at various levels of education have increasingly developed. However, there is little empirical evidence that reveals the use of speech acts and politeness strategies to represent moral values through sentences and utterances. Therefore, this research aims to determine the representation of moral values depicted through example sentences and utterances in English textbooks for grades 2 and 5 elementary schools in Indonesia. By adopting a discourse analysis research design that is integrated with Searle’s speech acts (1969) and politeness strategies (Brown & Levinson, 1972), this qualitative research explains the representation of moral values only in verbal texts. The collected data was analyzed using several steps, including combining, taking samples, recording/coding, reducing, concluding, and telling (Krippendorff, 2004). The findings of this research indicate that honesty, curiosity, and friendliness are the most dominant moral values depicted in two English textbooks for elementary schools in Indonesia. Apart from that, the findings of this research also reveal that the depiction of dominant moral values is conveyed through assertive speech acts and the Bald-On record politeness strategy. Dialogue/conversation, chapter covers, and student activity instructions are strategies for promoting moral values in textbooks. This research implies that teachers and textbook writers should provide more examples of moral values to students, especially those related to daily life communication.</p>
