ABSTRACT - The intent of the present study is to ascertain: 1) the composition of Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) type of exercises presented in the “English for Nusantara” for 8th grade students’ textbook, and 2) the dominant Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) cognitive level that exist in the “English for Nusantara” for 8th grade students’ textbook. The present investigation is carried out using a content analysis as the methodology. In addition, the data is collected through document analysis by choosing and reading every chapter in the primary source which is a textbook called “English for Nusantara” for 8th grade students, selecting the reading comprehension exercises, and giving codes to the data. Moreover, a technique called triangulation is utilized in this study to validate the data. To analyze the obtained data, this study is employed an interactive model proposed by Miles, et al. (2014). The result of this study reveals that: 1) the percentage of reading comprehension exercises that falls under the Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) category is 94.52%. Meanwhile, there are only 5.48% of reading comprehension exercises that are categorized as Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) exercises, 2) applying (C3) is the most dominant cognitive level in the Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) category. On the other hand, evaluating (C5) becomes the cognitive level that dominates the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) category.
