This study seeks to outline the varieties and purposes of Directive Speech Acts found in the film "Saving Private Ryan", analyze the translation strategies employed when rendering these speech acts from English to Bahasa Indonesia, uncover any alterations in meaning, and assess the translation's fidelity, appropriateness, and clarity.
The analysis of this study's data employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data originated from documents and informants, specifically the subtitles of the film "Saving Private Ryan" and two raters who validated and evaluated the quality of the Directive Speech Acts in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Purposive sampling technique was utilized to select both the documents and informants. Data collection involved content analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD).
The research findings reveal a total of 107 instances of directive speech acts, categorized into seven types: commanding (62 instances), requesting (31 instances), inviting (7 instances), warning (3 instances), prohibiting (2 instances), suggesting (1 instance), and prohibiting (1 instance). Additionally, the study identified 14 translation techniques employed by translators to convey these speech acts: established equivalent (44.32%), pure borrowing (10.75%), modulation (8.06%), variation (8.06%), implicitation (6.99%), literal translation (5.91%), explicitation (4.84%), paraphrase (3.23%), discursive creation (3.23%), generalization (1.61%), transposition (1.08%), addition (0.54%), and reduction (0.54%). Moreover, the translator altered the meaning in five instances: from commanding to requesting (2 instances), commanding to inviting (1 instance), inviting to commanding (1 instance), and commanding to prohibiting (1 instance). The average accuracy score is 2.67, indicating a relatively lower level of accuracy. Meanwhile, the average acceptability and readability scores are 2.96 and 2.98, respectively, indicating lower acceptability and moderate readability. The overall translation quality assessment score is 2.77 out of 3, suggesting that the translator successfully translated the directive speech acts from the source language to the target language in the film "Saving Private Ryan"
