×
This research explores the Affect Analysis on the Protagonist and Antagonist Characters and the Characterizations in “The Devil Wears Prada” Movie according to the theory by Martin and Rose (2007). The aims of this research are: (1) to discover the types of affect used in the movie, (2) to discover the use of affect by the protagonist and antagonist characters, (3) to explain the characterizations of the protagonist and antagonist in “The Devil Wears Prada” movie through the use of affect, and (4) to find out how the use of affect and the movie stages are related in determining the development of characterizations. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with an embedded single case study design. The data used in this research is primary data collected using the method of content analysis based on the appraisal approach in systemic functional linguistics (SFL). The sources of the data are the content and the generic structure of the movie including orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution. The data is then analyzed using the qualitative analysis model which divides the steps into domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis in combination with a matrix. The results of this study reveal that the frequency of affect usage by the protagonist and antagonist in “The Devil Wears Prada” movie constantly shifts, which is influenced by the different stages of the movie. The use of affect at the complication stage increases sharply from the orientation stage and then decreases gradually from the evaluation stage to the resolution stage. The types of affect namely inclination/disinclination, happiness/unhappiness, security/insecurity, and satisfaction/dissatisfaction are used by the characters according to their respective functions in showing different emotions depending on the context of the situation encountered. The use of affect also contributes to determining characterization indirectly, which can be observed from the emotional side, involving the character's reactions and thoughts that appear in speech or dialogue between characters in the movie. Finally, the development of characterization can be seen from the different characterizations at each stage of the movie. It shows that the characterizations of both characters begin with negative ones that are formed from orientation to complication stages and then develop into positive ones during evaluation and resolution stages.
