The research is descriptive research. The implementation of the Genre-Based Approach in the immersion classes is viewed from: the lesson plan, the syllabus, the teaching and learning activities in the classroom, the teacher’s role, the students’ role, and the role of the instructional material.
The research was conducted in the tenth grade students of immersion classes at SMA Negeri 4 Surakarta in 2008/2009 academic year. Based on the result of the study it can be concluded that the Genre-Based Approach is well implemented. From the class observations the teaching and learning process were going smoothly. The lesson plan that the teacher made is well implemented in the process of teaching and learning. The students were enjoying their study. They were active in following the lesson. The roles of the students are as cooperative learner and the negotiator. The teacher places the students as the main subject of the instructional process. The roles of the teacher in the teaching and learning process are as the facilitator, the motivator, and the class manager. The teacher facilitates the students to use their English as much as possible. The teacher provides the authentic teaching material and uses communicative method to makes the students use the language communicatively. The role of the teaching material is stimulating the students’ motivation to learn and as the source of knowledge for the students to learn. It also facilitates the communicative abilities of interpretation, expression and negotiation.
In the implementation of the Genre-Based Approach in the immersion classes there are some problems arising. The problems are the different competency of the students, the teacher’s understanding of the GBA, and the teacher’s mastery of the text type. To limit the problems the teacher always motivates the students to learn, gives feedback and correction for the students’ work. The teacher joins the workshop, seminar of education and MGMP meeting to enrich her teaching and her understanding of GBA and the text type. The teacher also reads books to enrich her knowledge about the GBA and the text type.
