The selection of reading texts should pay more attention to the readability level. This research aims to analyze: (1) the readability level of reading texts in the EFL Vocational High School textbook entitled ‘Splash Smart Path to Learning English’ for 10th  grade, as analyzed using the Coh-Metrix L2 readability level formula result (2) the syntactic pattern density of the reading texts in the EFL Vocational High School textbook entitled ‘Splash Smart Path to Learning English’ for 10th grade, as analyzed using the Coh-Metrix L2 result.

This research used content analysis. The type of data source was documents. The documents were from 28 reading texts in a vocational English textbook entitled Smart Path to Learning English. This research used Coh-Metrix to examine the data proposed by Graesser et al (2004). The data were collected and further analyzed through the interactive model proposed by Miles et al (2014).

The results indicated: (1) There were two reading texts suitable for the targeted grade level of tenth-grade vocational high school students. Sixteen reading texts were below the targeted grade level of tenth-grade vocational high school students. Besides, there were ten reading texts above the tenth-grade student's grade level (2) The majority of reading texts demonstrated a complex density of noun phrase densities, agentless passive voice densities, gerund densities, and infinitive densities. Based on those results, most reading texts in this textbook do not match with the tenth-grade student. Teachers were advised to have mastery in using readability level formulas. Teachers can test reading texts before using them in teaching and learning activities with this mastery.
