The aims of this study are: (1) to investigate the EFL learners’ perceptions when participating in collaborative learning in listening in daily communication class; (2) to reveal the challenges that EFL learners face when participating in collaborative learning in listening in daily communication class.

This study applies a qualitative approach in the form of a narrative inquiry as the methodology. The data of this study are collected through questionnaire, narrative frame, and interview. The sources of this data are five EFL learners in one of the universities in Surakarta who have joined an Listening in Daily Communication class. The techniques used to analyze the data are: (1) repeated reading of the data; (2) coding and categorizing data extracts; and (3) identifying thematic headings.

The result of the research shows that: (1) the participants have positive perception about collaborative learning in listening in daily communication class; (2) the participants encountered several challenges in collaborative learning, including differing opinions, varying knowledge levels that caused delays, and personal egos leading to conflicts and hindering productive discussions. 

This study suggests that the future research expand or increase the number of participants so that the results are not only representative of a few people, but could describe the experiences of EFL learners in collaborative learning classes as a whole.
