This research aims to identify and analyze the use of affect and characterizations of the protagonist and antagonist characters in the junior novelization of ‘Toy Story 3’. This research is designed to (1) find the types of affect used by the protagonist and antagonist in the novelization of ‘Toy Story 3’. (2) Explain the characterization of the characters based on the types of affect used by the protagonist and antagonist in the novelization of ‘Toy Story 3’. (3) Explain the development of protagonist and antagonist characterizations from orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution based on the types of affect used in the novelization of ‘Toy Story 3’. This research uses a descriptive qualitative design with a single embedded case study method. This research used an appraisal approach and a socio-semiotic approach based on the Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) theory. The location of this research is in the form of literature entitled ‘Toy Story 3’, the junior novelization of the famous film with the same title ‘Toy Story 3’. The source of data in this research is the structure of the novelization. The data were examined using four major stages, including: domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis. The results of this research show that there are 128 affect used by protagonists and antagonist characters in this novelization with the type of Security: Confidence being the affect most used. Moreover, the affect used by the protagonist and antagonist can create several characterization forms. Woody is depicted as an assertive, confident, loyal toy, and has emotional intelligence. Meanwhile, Lotso is depicted as an authoritarian, cruel, ambitious, evil toy, and has the paranoid disorder. Then, the affect used is also visible and begins to increase from the orientation to the complication stage, decreasing from the evaluation to the resolution stage.
