This research is conducted to examine the representation of women in the film entitled A World Without. The film was broadcasted on Netflix in 2021, and directed by a feminist director, Nia Dinata. Categorized as a dystopian sci-fi drama, the story focuses on the 3 women who get trapped in a mysterious organization, The Light, a reclusive community which promises the young women to achieve the best version of themselves in life. This research is attracted on the representation of women's powerlessness, despite their hard attempts to fight against various issues which hinder them from gaining their subjectivity. To answer the research questions, this research applies Johanes Ehrat's semiotic film analysis which uses a cinematic narration and enunciation to interpret the meaning of representation. Thus, the data are the scenes and dialogues, and interpreted in the layers of firstness, secondness, and thirdness. The research finds the elements of surveillance, loss of individuality, and dehumanization of women, the characteristics of dystopian society, putting women under invisible surveillance. The Light embodies the cult which gives two contradictory messages, in which in its surfaces, it encourages the members to activate the inner power of their self, however it actually exploits women to obey the organization through utilizing the ideological state apparatuses (ISA) of family and marriage. The aspect battle against ISA exists when the three female characters reject the idea of totalitarianism, uniformity, and dehumanization which exploited them as a product of the cult. Through their battle against the cult, the film raises awareness about the importance of women empowerment. In addition, the representation of women characters and their marriage problem also related with women’s issues that still happen in Indonesian society such as: child marriage, domestic violence, and polygamy. Those issues still happen due to the influence of socio-economic background and the gender ideology that still undermine women in the society. The film rejects the grand narrative about women’s stereotype and role in society, especially about marriage. Furthermore, the film shows the multi-faceted characters, with varied problem. It shows scepticism towards the idea of marriage as key happiness for women, general reasoning why women have to gain their own power, emphasize individual values and beliefs, while at the same time showing the fragmentation of the marriage issues represented in the film.
