This research focuses on the expressive speech acts and the translation in the movie “Along For The Ride”. This study aims to identify the types of expressive speech acts, to analyze the subtitling strategies used in translating the expressive speech acts, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the subtitles in conveying the expressive speech acts in terms of functional equivalence, acceptability, and readability, specifically punctuation and graphics. This study employed descriptive qualitative research to explain the phenomenon of expressive speech acts in the movie. The data were collected using total sampling, and purposive sampling was used to select the raters to validate the data. Two methods of data collection were applied in this research, which are content analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Two raters engaged in a focus group discussion to evaluate the data.

The results of this study revealed 61 data of expressive speech acts which classified into ten types: apologizing with 14 data (23%), thanking with 13 data (21.3%), greetings with 7 data (11.5%), complimenting with 7 data (11.5%), complaining with 6 data (9.8%), boasting with 5 data (8.2%), lamenting with 4 data (6.6%), praising with 2 data (3.3%), welcoming with 2 data (3.3%), and condoling with 1 data (1.6%). The five subtitling strategies were used by the translator to translate the expressive speech acts, they are transfer, paraphrase, condensation, imitation, and expansion. The overall error score of expressive speech acts subtitles was 0.005.

As a result, this study offers an in-depth analysis of the subtitle of expressive speech acts in the movie Along for the Ride. The results highlight the significance of the transfer strategy in maintaining the accuracy of the original message, the subtle use of paraphrase, and the occasional need to use strategies like condensation, imitation, and expansion. These findings add to the broader understanding of audiovisual translation in general and emphasise the significance of subtitling is to maintaining the emotional and communicative essence of the original work.
