This research examines the Indonesian audiences’ perspectives on subversive empowerment, particularly in relation to adolescence and teen pregnancy topics as represented in Juno (2007). The data was collected through focus group discussions that complied with the film screenings. The research utilizes Stuart Hall's audience reception theory. The findings reveal that Indonesian audiences’ perception of subversive empowerment in Juno are influenced by their cultural background, societal norms, and individual beliefs. The findings also reveal multifaceted spectrum of perceptions in regard to Juno’s (2007) portrayal of subversive empowerment in relation to adolescence and teen pregnancy topics. Moreover, some audience responses showcased nuanced interpretations, demonstrating negotiated and oppositional responses in interpreting the film’s meaning.
