Exploring the Undergraduate EFL Students’ Professional Identity Formation and Motivation in Career Decision Making: A Narrative Inquiry

who aim to enter the teaching profession must engage in identity development,

particularly in shaping their professional identity. This process is essential

for both addressing teacher shortages and fostering their own growth as

undergraduates. Employing narrative inquiry, the purpose of this research is to

<span xss=removed>find the undergraduate EFL students’ teacher

professional identity formation, their decision about the teaching profession

as a career choice, and their plans. This research data was gathered through

narrative frames, interviews, and focus group discussions from the experiences

of four male undergraduate EFL students after completing the teaching course

and practice. Utilizing thematic analysis for data analysis, this research demonstrated

three findings. The initial finding reveals that teachers’ professional

identity is shaped by students’ aspirations to enter the teaching field and

their family background. When their decision to become teachers closely aligns

with having teachers in the family, their professional identity is further

developed, and the opposite holds. The second finding shows that one student

chose teaching as their first choice, two chose teaching as their second

choice, and one did not choose teaching as a career. The third finding shows

that situations, environment, and family often influence their plans, but their

career plans are in their power according to their career goals. This implies

that the teaching profession needs to be improved regarding teaching load,

salary, and ethical guidelines that increase attractiveness to fill the need

for teachers in Indonesia.</span><o></o></span></p>
