×<p>Previous studies have investigated the influence of institutional variables on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in various regions, yielding two conclusions: institutional variables can have either a positive or negative impact on MSMEs. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of institutional variables on MSMEs. Gunungkidul Regency was selected as the study area because, despite its less favorable economic and geographical conditions, it has the highest number of MSMEs in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) Province. This study employs the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method using data from the Village Potential Survey (Podes) conducted by Statistics Indonesia (BPS). Six independent variables are utilized, namely: education (number of senior high schools and vocational high schools), health (community health centers), technology (PLN electricity users), economy (banks), and natural disasters (floods). Meanwhile, the number of MSMEs in each village serving as the dependent variable. This study observes 144 villages on 2018 Podes survey. The finding reveals that health and technology variables have a positive and significant effect on MSMEs, while economic and natural disaster variables have a negative and significant effect. The education variable demonstrates two effects, including the number of senior high schools has an insignificant impact, whereas the number of vocational high schools has a positive and significant effect on MSMEs. These findings suggest that most variables are significant, leading to the recommendation that efforts to strengthen and make institutions more inclusive should be prioritized to support the advancement of MSMEs in Gunungkidul Regency. </p>
