×
Indiyani Nur Fatimah. 2025. Translation Analysis of Phatic Expressions Uttered by Hadley Sullivan in the Love at First Sight Movie. Undergraduate Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta.

This research aimed to analyze the functions of phatic expressions uttered by Hadley Sullivan in the Love at First Sight movie, as well as the translation techniques, translation shifts, and translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability.

This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. Moreover, the study was product-oriented and utilized a single embedded case study design. The primary data consisted of linguistic data and translation data. The linguistic data were phatic expressions uttered by Hadley Sullivan in the Love at First Sight movie. Meanwhile, the translation data consisted of the translation techniques, shifts, and quality. The data sources were the Love at First Sight movie with English and Indonesian subtitles and the informants. This research used purposive sampling techniques to select the movie and the informants. For data collection, this research employed two methods: document analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). In addition, the data analysis technique included domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and analysis of cultural themes.

The findings show that 156 phatic expressions were found in Hadley’s utterances. Three functions were found: a communication starter, a communication supporter, and a communication terminator. The communication supporter function became the most frequently found function. The translator used eight translation techniques to translate the phatic expression, including the established equivalent, deletion, variation, modulation, pure borrowing, explicitation, implicitation, and reduction, with the established equivalent technique being the most frequently used. Certain translation techniques affected the absence or presence of the shift in the function of the phatic expression in the target text. The researcher found that the deletion technique caused the translation to experience a shifting function from what was originally a phatic expression that functioned as a communication supporter to none. For translation quality, translations using established equivalent techniques, variation, modulation, pure borrowing, explicitation, and implicitation show high accuracy and acceptability levels. Meanwhile, the translations using deletion and reduction techniques experience a decrease in accuracy. In addition, the use of the variation technique in certain contexts and deletion techniques decreased the acceptability level.

This study concludes that when translating phatic expressions from English to Indonesian, translators should consider their functional aspects, particularly those that function as communication supporters in the form of pause fillers and responses. Future researchers are encouraged to further examine the forms of phatic expressions, take the readability aspect into account in Translation Quality Assessment (TQA), and apply similar analyses to various types of media.
