Thesis, Surakarta : Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Sebelas
Maret, Maret 2025.
This study aims to (1) explore teachers' cognition regarding pronunciation
teaching and (2) analyze the strategies employed by teachers in teaching
pronunciation at the senior high school level. The research was a qualitative case
study involving two English teachers from SMA Negeri 1 Boyolali. Data were
collected through classroom observations, interviews, questionnaires, and
documentations. The central issue identified was the significant influence of
teachers' cognitive processes encompassing their knowledge, expectations,
viewpoints, intellection, past experiences, and beliefs on their pronunciation teaching
practices. The research focused on two English teachers at Senior High School in
Boyolali, who were selected based on their direct experience in teaching
pronunciation in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The findings of
this study revealed that: 1) Teachers employed various strategies, including the
drilling method, multimedia-based learning to enhance students' pronunciation
skills. 2) Challenges faced by teachers included students' lack of confidence, limited
exposure to English outside the classroom, and pronunciation difficulties
influenced by their native language. There is a persistent gap between teachers'
beliefs about the importance of pronunciation instruction and their actual classroom
practices, particularly in EFL contexts. The findings underscore the importance of
understanding teacher cognition in pronunciation instruction and highlight the need
for effective strategies that provide to students' diverse learning styles and
motivations.
