× This study aims to: 1) explore of teachers' understanding of the Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) concept, 2) identify strategies used by teachers in promoting ICC, 3) explore the challenges faced by teachers in promoting ICC. A case study approach was used in this research, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data obtained. This study involved three participants: 1) a female EFL teacher with teaching experience since 2017, 2) a female EFL teacher with teaching experience since 2018, 3) a male principal with teaching experience since 2005. The finding of this study concluded that: 1) teachers in Banyuwangi have a good understanding of ICC namely a) understanding attitude with an openness and curiosity, b) understanding knowledge by involving mastery of their own and other cultures, c) understanding of skill interpreting and relating  within the category of relating cultural perspectives, by linking foreign cultural themes to local communication contexts, hence facilitating students' contextual interpretation of cultural meanings d) understanding of skill discovery and interaction by applying findings in practical contexts, this is demonstrated through teachers' ability to learn about cultures and interact with diverse perspectives,  and supported by school, e) understanding of critical cultural awareness with evaluating of other cultures, this indicates within the ability of teachers to comprehend diverse cultures and critically evaluate the values, norms, and assumptions that underlying them, 2) strategies used to improve students' intercultural communication competencies include a) material integration with technology, videos and other relevant resources,  help develop attitude aspect, b) reflective discussions by discussion also providing feedback, help develop critical couture awareness, c) collaborative projects, such as role playing and presentation activities, help develop skill discovery and interaction, d) using media by social media ( You Tube, TikTok and Instagram), text and video help develop skill discovery and interaction and e) collaborative discussions and presentation by using worksheets to discuss and discussion, help develop skill discovery and interaction, 3) challenges in promoting ICC are a) negative and passive attitudes toward application and interactive learning, b) cultural stereotypes, c) student enthusiasm and engagement, d) distraction technology, and e) lack of interest and confidence. This study highlights the importance of training programs for teachers to enhance their understanding (ICC) through workshops, seminars, or online modules. It is suggested that EFL teachers can develop more participatory teaching strategies and incorporate technology, collaborative projects, and cultural discussions to increase student engagement in ICC learning.
