This study investigates the use of politeness strategies by characters in “The Princess Switch” movie. This study aims to find the types of politeness strategies, to explore the social context that underline the use of politeness strategies, and to analyze the characterization based on the use of politeness strategies. This study uses politeness strategy theory as the main theory for analyzing data. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative with single embedded study using pragmatic approach. Four politeness strategies used by the characters were identified in this film: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record, and their sub-strategies. Additionally, this study identified the social context underlying the use of politeness strategies, which are power and social distance. The use of politeness strategies by the characters in the film reveals their characterization. This study shows that there are changes in the use of politeness strategies based on changes in the social context of the main characters in the “The Princess Switch” movie. The characterization of the main characters is shown by changes in the use of politeness strategies and the underlying social context.
