K2218046. EXPLORING NON-MILLENNIAL

ENGLISH TEACHERS’ STRATEGIES IN ONLINE TEACHING DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: A

NARRATIVE INQUIRY. Thesis of English Education Department at Faculty of

Teachers Training and Education, Sebelas Maret University, 2025<o></o>

This study explores the strategies

employed by non-millennial English teachers (aged 53–54) at a public senior

high school in Central Java, Indonesia, during the shift to online teaching

caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a narrative inquiry approach, the

research aimed to gain insight into how these experienced teachers adapted to

the digital learning environment despite limited prior exposure to

technology-based instruction. The methodology involved (1) conducting in-depth,

semi-structured interviews with two participants and (2) applying thematic

analysis to identify recurring patterns within their teaching experiences. The

findings reveal that (1) the participants utilized a combination of

synchronous–asynchronous teaching and blended learning strategies, often

relying on ICT tools such as Google Classroom, Google Meet, Microsoft 365, and

WhatsApp to maintain instruction and student engagement, and (2) they

experienced various challenges including limited internet access, poor

connectivity, outdated devices, and mental fatigue—despite having attended

online teaching seminars. Nonetheless, their strong motivation to learn and

their collaborative spirit with fellow teachers enabled them to gradually

improve their digital competence. These findings imply that (1) non-millennial

teachers are capable of adapting to online instruction when supported with

accessible, user-friendly technology, (2) sustained institutional guidance and

peer collaboration are essential in building their ICT literacy, and (3)

professional development programs tailored to their generational needs should

be prioritized to bridge the gap between pedagogical expertise and digital

fluency in the evolving landscape of education.
