×
This study explores junior high school students’ perceptions of selfassessment in English speaking skills and identifies the specific speaking aspects they consider important during the process. The research is grounded in the need to enhance student-centered and reflective practices in EFL classrooms, particularly at the junior high school level where speaking is often underemphasized. The study aims to describe students’ cognitive, affective, and conative responses to selfassessment and analyze which speaking components, such as pronunciation, grammar, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension they prioritize during selfevaluation. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research was conducted at a junior high school in Karanganyar. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, field notes, and self-assessment rubrics. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. The findings reveal that students generally perceive self-assessment as a useful tool, viewing it as a reflective and motivating practice that improves awareness, confidence, and responsibility in speaking. Students particularly focus on pronunciation and grammar accuracy during self-assessment. The study concludes that structured self-assessment, supported by rubrics, fosters learner autonomy and metacognitive awareness. It contributes to the development of effective speaking instruction in EFL contexts and offers practical implications for teachers seeking to implement meaningful selfassessment strategies in the classroom.
