This internship report is written based on the implementation of my Student Internship Program (KMM) conducted at Wayang Orang Sriwedari Surakarta. What makes Wayang Orang Sriwedari interesting is the presence of Punakawan characters who always insert humor and social criticism in their every performance. My internship was carried out for two months, from February 10 to April 5, 2025. The objectives of my internship were to gain real-world experience in a professional environment, apply my translation skills directly, and expand my networking in the world of work. In addition, this internship also provided me with an opportunity to understand the dynamics of working in an active and productive performing arts institution. My main activity during the internship was to translate the storyline of wayang orang from Indonesian to English. The translation aims to make it easier for international audiences to understand the context of the stories during the performance. The challenge I faced was translating unfamiliar cultural terms. To find the definition of these cultural terms, I used KBBI, Google, KBJI, and AI (Artificial Intelligence). In completing the task, I used translation techniques of Molina and Albir (2002), such as borrowing, amplification, and substitution. In addition to the main activities, I also assisted in digital content creation and received audiences. This internship has brought me many benefits, such as improving my translation skills, communication skills, and teamwork. Besides that, direct involvement in the performance and work process at Wayang Orang Sriwedari also developed my sense of proudness and loveliness for Indonesian traditional arts and culture. The results of this internship show that translation activities not only train language accuracy but also demand critical and adaptive thinking skills.
