Whether intentional or not, generalizations about behavior, roles, and gender traits continue to exist and significantly influence social experiences. This study focuses on the impact of such stereotypes on unmarried single mothers in Surakarta, Indonesia. The well-being of this group is a crucial yet often overlooked component of overall social welfare, particularly among marginalized populations.

In Indonesia, single mothers face unique social, economic, and cultural challenges that deeply affect their lives. Surakarta, a city rich in cultural heritage, is not immune to the widespread gender-based stereotypes that affect these women. Therefore, this research seeks to explore how such stereotypes shape the lived experiences of unmarried single mothers and how their surrounding environment reinforces these stigmas. The primary aim is to identify strategies to help reduce the everyday impact of these stereotypes in their communities.

The study employs a descriptive qualitative method using a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, documentation of symbolic and social conditions, and data validation through source triangulation to ensure the credibility of the findings. The research involved five unmarried single mothers living in Surakarta and focused on four key areas: social stigma, economic hardship, support networks, and coping mechanisms. According to the National Socioeconomic Survey conducted by the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there were approximately 11.5 million single mothers in Indonesia in 2020 (Badan Pusat Statistik Indonesia., 2020), representing about 15.7% of the country’s female population. This figure highlights the urgent need to bring attention to the issues faced by this often-neglected group.

The findings suggest that efforts to address stigma must not only aim at reducing its daily effects but also at fostering broader social awareness and long-term structural change. Moreover, it reveals that single mothers experience intersectional stigma in their everyday lives, based on their gender, class, religious status and other dominate categories manifested in Indonesian society. This stigmatization is a differentiated process, which is affected by social distance. It begins with self-stigmatization and moves outwards to family, community and ultimately to the state and society. This research contributes to a deeper sociological understanding of intersecting stigma and stereotypes and provides a foundation for the development of more inclusive and equitable social policies for single mothers in Indonesia.
