This study examines the occurrence of code-switching in online communication, specifically within the Indonesian Twitter community, by analyzing the conversational tweets from the @tanyakanrl Menfess account. The primary aims of the research are to determine the types of code-switching employed, to investigate the motivations for their usage, and to explore how tweet structures affect the frequency of code-switching. The research is based on Poplack’s (1980) theory that divides code-switching into Inter-sentential, Intra-sentential, and Tag switching, as well as Hoffmann’s (2014) theory regarding motivations for code-switching. This study utilizes a qualitative approach with ethnographic analysis to examine 509 tweets, consisting of both original tweets and replies. The data were gathered over a month and examined using domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analyses. The tweets were chosen through purposive sampling, emphasizing the occurrence of Indonesian-English code-switching. The results indicate that Intra-sentential is the most commonly utilized type of code-switching, followed by Inter-sentential and Tag switching. The primary motivation for code-switching is to discuss a specific subject, with expressing empathy and group identity coming next. Moreover, the structure of tweets greatly affects code-switching frequency, showing higher instances in source tweets compared to replies. These findings show that code-switching serves as both a linguistic device and a method influenced by the context of communication, cultural identity, and the dynamics of social media engagement.
