study investigates subcultural representation and identity in the music videos
for t.A.T.u.'s <i>"All the Things She Said" </i>(2009)<i> </i>and<i>
"Not Gonna Get Us </i>(2008)<i>"</i> focusing on how visual elements
and lyrics articulate forms of resistance to dominant social norms. The primary
analytical framework is Dick Hebdige's subcultural theory, which examines how
style functions as a means of resistance to hegemonic ideologies. James
Monaco's film analysis approach and Stuart Hall's theory of representation are
applied as supporting frameworks to explore how meaning is constructed and
communicated through visual language. The study places the analysis within the
socio-cultural context of early 2000s Russia, characterized by conservative
values and rigid heteronormativity. Using descriptive qualitative methods, the
research is based on 36 screenshots from the videos and 12 lyric excerpts. The
findings indicate that <i>All the Things She Said (2009)</i> conveys the
tension between personal identity and social control through repetitive lyrics,
cold lighting, emotional displays, and symbolic barriers such as fences and
school uniforms. In contrast, <i>Not Gonna Get Us (2008) presents</i> a narrative
of emotional and physical escape from institutional constraints, represented
through dynamic visuals, a snowstorm, and symbols of self-determined freedom
such as a stolen vehicle. This study concludes that t.A.T.u.'s music video,
through its integration of visual and lyrical elements, functions as a powerful
subcultural text that offers an alternative discourse on identity, freedom, and
resistance to restrictive social ideologies.<o></o></span></p>
