Work Posture Improvement and Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders at PT X

Jombang. Bachelor of Applied Occupational Health Safety, Vocational

School, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta.<o></o>

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a

common occupational health issue in the manufacturing sector, particularly

among sorting workers who maintain prolonged forward-bent sitting positions

without proper back support. This posture can lead to discomfort in the neck,

back, and waist, as well as increase the risk of postural strain and injury. <o></o>

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the

effectiveness of an ergonomic sorting chair (ESC) designed based on local

anthropometric data in improving work postures and reducing MSD complaints and

in sorting workers.<o></o>

Method: Using Research and Development (R&D). A

total of 88 sorting workers were divided into two groups: an intervention group

that used the ESC, and a control group that continued to use a conventional

chair. The ESC was ergonomically designed with a backrest to support sorting

activities. Assessments were conducted before and after the intervention for 6

days using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA)

methods. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and independent t-test.<o></o>

Result: The intervention group demonstrated a 49.89%

reduction in MSD complaints and a 48.31% improvement in RULA scores. In

contrast, the control group experienced a 1.78% increase in MSD complaints and

a 4.04?cline in posture scores.

<o></o>

Conclusion: The

ergonomic intervention using ESC proved effective in reducing musculoskeletal

complaints and enhancing work posture. This chair design offers a practical

ergonomic solution to improve worker health and productivity in industrial

environments.<o></o>
