Universitas Sebelas Maret. Surakarta. The existence of culture brings tradition to the people, shaping their way of life and beliefs. Each place carries its own practice, which has been passed down through generations from their ancestors. Traditions come in many forms, one of them is ritualistic tradition. With countless traditions being practiced, it raises a question: Can longstanding ritualistic traditions have negative effects on society's progress and individual well-being? This question will be answered through the plot and the characters in the play-script “Beluga World.” The purpose of this writing is to raise the audience's awareness that not all traditions are worth practicing because some of them could have harmful outcomes. The play-script centers on the journey of Wangsa, Daru, and Mala, where they must step out of their comfort zone and be courageous to go on a voyage and explore the woods to seek the sovereign, Mr. Ersa, in order to stop the ritualistic tradition being practiced. Through the journey of the characters to find the answer of the mystery of a ritualistic tradition that happen in their island, it is displayed that cruel and dangerous ritualistic tradition has negative effects for the people in the area, such as emotional trauma, breakdown of family structures, weak trust within communities, and loss of one’s sense of safety and belonging.
