This research aimed to uncover the subtle backlash against feminism in the film Kramer vs. Kramer by examining how the male and female characters were portrayed. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. The analysis applied Johannes Ehrat’s film semiotics and Vladimir Propp’s theory of character roles to examine character framing. These frameworks were then connected to Susan Faludi’s theory of backlash to answer the research question. The data for this research consisted of cinematic elements and dialogues from selected scenes in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). The analysis revealed that Ted Kramer was framed as the hero, while Joanna Kramer was framed as the dispatcher, who sent the hero on his journey. The film supported Ted’s transformation into a nurturing father and portrayed his growth with emotional depth. In contrast, Joanna’s decision to leave in search of independence and self-discovery was framed as abandonment and disruption to the family. The narrative, dialogue, and cinematic elements found in the results reinforced the message of Faludi’s backlash theory, which argued that media often portrayed feminist actions as harmful to family and society. While the film appeared to support a progressive image of male struggle and growth, it subtly undermined feminist values by denying the female character’s emotional visibility and growth.
