This creative thesis, titled ‘Alternative-Alternatives’, is a playscript that explores how the pursuit of power and wealth can transform an individual’s behavior and identity. Inspired by contemporary social issues, the work addresses two central questions: 1) What drives individuals to justify any means in their pursuit of power and wealth? 2) To what extent do power and wealth inflate a person’s ego and alter their attitudes? The play aims to raise awareness about the profound impacts of power and wealth on individuals, drawing on a syncretic ideological framework blending Religious, Pancasila, and Islam-Kejawen values to reflect Indonesia’s pluralistic and multicultural heritage. Through a realist dramatic approach, the playscript employs deep emotional characterization to evoke authentic audience responses. The creative process involved self-observation, selfreflection, and extensive reading to build a robust knowledge base, enabling the script to address how power and wealth can distance individuals from their authentic selves. The narrative centers on Nafari, a complex protagonist who confronts Isiah and Abraham, two characters who conspire to embrace a corrupt system for personal gain. Nafari’s ideological resistance to the dehumanizing effects of systemic greed ultimately succumbs to the overwhelming allure of power and wealth, leading to a tragic farewell to his moral foundations, consumed by ego. Isiah’s hypocrisy and acts of murder exemplify the destructive consequences of greed-driven ambition, serving as aesthetic and emotional anchors for the drama. Grounded in realist drama and informed by theories of social behavior, the playscript weaves a relatable narrative with a reliable plot structure, designed to resonate powerfully in live performances. By exploring the tension between individual integrity and systemic corruption, ‘AlternativeAlternatives’ underscores the erosion of egalitarian values in the face of power and wealth, offering a poignant commentary on human nature and societal dynamics.
