× This research explores the intersection of translation and literary characterization through the analysis of Dorothy’s speech acts in L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and their representation in the Indonesian translation. Speech acts, as introduced by Austin (1962) and later developed by Searle and Vanderveken (1985), are communicative actions performed via utterances, such as requesting, asserting, or apologizing. This study aims to examine how Dorothy’s speech acts are rendered in the English and Indonesian translation and the characterization found in the utterances. In addition, this study examines the translation strategy used to render the utterance and analyze the impact. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive method using the framework of Searle and Vanderveken’s classification of illocutionary acts of assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative to categorize Dorothy’s utterances. Translation strategies are analyzed based on Chesterman’s (2016) pragmatic and syntactic translation strategies, which include explicitness change, cultural filtering, interpersonal change, and others. Furthermore, Rimmon-Kenan’s (2002) theory of characterization, particularly indirect characterization through speech, is employed to assess how Dorothy’s character is constructed in both the source and target texts. The data were obtained from the original English novel and its official Indonesian translation. The findings show that directive speech acts are the most frequently used category in Dorothy’s utterances, reflecting her role as a determined, caring, and proactive character. Assertive, expressive, and commissive acts also appear with varied functions that further develop her persona. In the Indonesian translated version, every speech act is retained. However, some shift in the characterization occur due to translation strategies. The most commonly applied pragmatic strategy is explicitness change, followed by cultural filtering and interpersonal change. For syntactic strategies, the most common are Literal translation, followed by phrase structure change, and clause structure change. These shifts impact how readers of the Indonesian version perceive Dorothy, sometimes intensifying or softening her traits compared to the source text. This study contributes to the growing field of translation studies by highlighting the importance of pragmatic and syntactic considerations in translating literary dialogue.. Practically, the research can inform translators and scholars about maintaining illocutionary force and character consistency in literary translations. Theoretically, it enriches the understanding of speech act theory within the context of children’s literature and its translation. Future studies may expand by analyzing more characters or comparing different translation versions to examine further the role of translation strategies in character portrayal
