This research used contemporary archieves such as newspapers article, advertisments, and illustration from mass medias and supported by relevant academic books and articles. The result of the research shows that fashion change is something very dynamic and can become a mirror to reflect on how the change of social and economic aspect affecting the wearers. Semarang, with its heterogen population and structural social hierarchies making the fashion change happened there is closely tied with how the society itself change socially and economically. The Chinese descents had an important role as mediator between two opposite social hierarchy, the elites (the Dutch) and the natives. Those Chinese descents then dominates the fashion industry in Semarang. Youngsters and new money elites are the easiest and most updated people in regards of following the fashion trends since the trends itself represents modernity and needs quite a fund to keep following it.The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that fashion change is something dynamics and that dynamic is largerly affected by the social and economic change. Fashion industry with Western influence was dominated by the Dutch but then the Chinee descents took over after the independence. The dynamic of women’s fashion in Semarang which at first was segregated by race, in line with the change in social and economic landscape after the Indonesian independence, became the fashion that can be followed by everyone.
