An Analysis Of English-Indonesian Translation Of Culturalterms In Khaled Hosseini’s Novel  “A Thousand Splendid Suns”

× ABSTRACT This research focuses on the analysis of strategies and quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability of the message of the cultural terms in Khaled Hosseini ‘s novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” that want to be conveyed by the translator from the source language into target language. This is a descriptive qualitative research. This research aims to describe the translation of cultural terms in the novel Khaled Hosseini’s novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. There are two kinds of data in this research. The first data are all the cultural terms found in the novel and the second data are the scores collected from the informants. This research belongs to descriptive study and applies qualitative method. To collect the data, total sampling technique is applied. The results of the analysis show that there are 109 cultural terms found in the novel. They are classified into four groups. They are 18 ecology (16,51%), 11 social culture (10,09 %), 76 material culture/artifacts (69,74%) and 4 organizations, customs, ideas (political, social, religious, artistic) (3,66%). In this study, the translator employs strategies of changing the lexicon with its equivalence in TL, literal translation, translation by more general word (superordinate), translation by more neutral/less expressive word, translation by cultural substitutions, translation by loan word or loan word plus explanation and translation by omission. The most frequently used strategy is changing the lexicon with its equivalence in TL (59 data), which covers 45.73% of all the data. The accuracy level of the translation is high. There are 92 data (84.4%) considered to be accurate translation, 12 data (11%) considered to be less accurate translation, 4 data (3.7%) considered to be inaccurate translation and one datum (0.9%) considered to be very inaccurate translation. The strategy result in translation with high level of accuracy is the strategy of changing a lexicon with its equivalence. The degree of acceptability of the cultural terms translation in “A Thousand Splendid Suns” novel is high. There are 94 data (86.2%) considered to be acceptable (classification A), 10 data (9.3%) considered to be less acceptable (classification B), and 5 data (4.5%) considered unacceptable (classification C). The strategy results in translation with high level of acceptability is the strategy of changing a lexicon with its equivalence. It is hoped that this thesis will be helpful for students in broadening their knowledge about translating cultural term and can stimulate other researchers to conduct a further study related to translation of cultural terms.
