× The process of nitrification in the soil needs to be controlled because it causes inefficiency of nitrogen fertilization. The problems can be controlled by indirectly setting of the litter quality. Litter quality will influences nitrification because NH4+ in the soil will be immobilited by heterotrof microbial during litter decomposition, so there isn’t substance nitrification process. From that process will be got a nitrification inhibition strategies that are environmentally and sustainable through the management of litter quality. This study aimed to know the influence of litter quality on the dynamics of NH4+, NO3-, and nitrification potential in the growth of maize (Zea mays L.); to know the relationship between N uptake of maize (Zea mays L.) to the dynamics of NH4+, NO3-, and soil nitrification potential. This research was in July until October 2009. This research was a pot experiment with sampling and functional relationships undestructif Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisted of the various litter like low quality cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale), medium quality turmeric (Curcuma domestica), and high quality paitan (Tithonia diversifolia), and the dose given litter 5, 10, 15 Mg / ha. All treatment was added of urea fertilizer 200 kg/ha, as substance nitrification. The parameters were measured by concentration of soil NH4+, concentration of soil NO3-, potential nitrification and heterotrophic bacteria performed on 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 DAT, and N uptake of maize (Zea mays L.) . The results showed that: a) giving a variety of litter during the 30 DAP showed the low nitrification potential average 0.5517 mg NO2/g soil/5 hours was a effective time to reduce nitrification. b) the low quality of Anacardium occidentale Litter ratio (L+P)/N 3.24 average litter formation of NH4+ the highest concentration of 0.2269 ppm. c) the medium quality of Curcuma domestica litter ratio (L+P)/N 19.15 had the lowest nitrification potential average 2 mg NO2/g soil/5 hours. d) the high quality Tithonia diversifolia litter ratio (L+P)/N of 8.26 had the highest rates of NO3- concentration 0.1528 ppm, and the highest nitrification potential average 2.4 mg NO2/g soil/5 hours. So regulating of various quality litter can inhibit the rate of NH4+ release, NO3- formation, and nitrification potential. Key words : litter quality, concentration of soil NH4+, concentration of soil NO3- and nitrification potential.
