× This action research is intended on improving the students’ English vocabulary mastery. The previous research showed vocabulary mastery of the students in SMPN IV Nawangan is low. After identifying the problem and its derivation, considering characteristics of students as well as several theoretical review, storytelling technique was chosen to conquer the problem. This action research is focused in finding out whether or not storytelling can improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The method of the research is action research. The subject of the research is the eighth grade students of SMPN IV Nawangan, Pacitan. There were 27 students in the B eighth grade. The research was conducted from February 15, 2010 to May 15, 2010 at SMPN IV Nawangan, Pacitan. It was carried out in two cycles with total 10 meetings. There were series of steps in each cycle, namely identifying problem, planning, implementation, observation, reflection, and revising the plan. The technique for collecting the data were 1) observation, to observe all activities during teaching learning process 2) test, to know whether there is improvement of students’ vocabulary achievement. The result of the study shows that the use of storytelling in teaching English vocabulary can improve students’ vocabulary mastery. It can be seen from the computation on the students’ score using non-independent t-test. The level of significance of the improvement between pre-test 1 and post-test 1 was 14.197. The improvement of achievement in the test included the aspects of vocabulary such as pronunciation, synonym, antonym, concept, and grasping meaning. In the pre-test, students’ achievement was under standard. After the teacher explained the vocabulary using storytelling technique, the students’ achievement improves higher than test before. It was also happened in the next per-test and post-test. However, the level of significance of the improvement in the pre-test 2 and post-test 2 was not same with the test before. In the pre- test 2 and post-test 2 , the level of significance of the improvement was 14.747. Meanwhile the standard in t-table ( ) for 27 students is 2.048. Because and is higher than ( ), it means that score in pre-test and post-test either 1 or 2 have a significant different. On the other word, the students’ achievement increased significantly in every cycle. Besides, storytelling can also improve the students’ participation and motivation in the class. This can be seen from the students’ enthusiasm to join all activities during the research. Based on the result of the research, it is proven that storytelling technique can improve students’ vocabulary mastery simultaneously. However, as a note that presenting vocabulary using storytelling activity is effective and efficient if the activity involves the students. Therefore, in teaching vocabulary using storytelling activity the teacher should be creative so that the students can pay attention and participate actively in teaching-learning process.
