This study focuses o n the analysis of the accuracy of the message being conveyed by an amateur consecutive interpreter from the source language into the target language, the fluency of the interpreter, and the possible factors affecting the accuracy and the fluency of the interpretation.

The aims of this study are to find out how accurate and fluent the interpretation is and to find out possible factors affecting the accuracy and fluency of the interpretation.

This study is a descriptive qualitative research. It employs purposive sampling technique. All the sentences of the transcription were taken as data.

The researcher finds that of 329 data, 268 (81,4%) are accurately interpreted, 51 (15,5%) are not so accurately rendered into the target language, and the rest or 10 (3,03%) do not convey message of the original utterances. For the fluency term, the researcher finds that of 329 data, 222 are fluently interpreted. The other 107 data belong to influent interpretation, indicating that more than 50% of the data are interpreted fluently. Due to process of interpreting, there are two main factors affecting the accuracy and fluency of the interpretation. The first factor is technical, where the interpreter used a wired microphone which restricted his movement during the process of interpretation. The second relates to the interpreter’s memory, self-confidence, and language competence. There are also cases where the speaker did not cooperate well with the interpreter.

From the explanation, it can be concluded that interpreting is a complex activity requiring language skills, language competences, adequate equipment, and good cooperation between the interpreter and the speaker. As this study has indicated, various problems (technical and non-technical) emerge during the process of interpreting, which affect its outcomes. This study examines the interpretation produced by an amateur consecutive interpreter and it is likely that the study is the first o ne to look at how an oral translation is carried out. In relation to this, the researcher encourages other researchers to do similar studies to find out more about the nature and the phenomenon of interpreting.
