× The objectives of this research are to know whether the use of animated video can improve students’ speaking skill and to describe what happens in the class when animated video is applied in teaching speaking. The method used in this research was action research. The researcher conducted this research from September until October 2010 on SMP Negeri 15 Surakarta. The subject was the students of class VIII-B. This class consists of 36 students. In this research, the researcher taught speaking using animated video. The data were collected from the result of observations, interviews, questionnaires, and tests. These data were compared and analyzed to get a conclusion as the result of this research. This research was conducted in two cycles of actions. The result of this research showed that after conducted the actions, the students’ speaking skills and the students’ motivation toward speaking are improved. This improvement could be seen from the test result and the students’ attitude during the lesson. The students’ mean score in the pre-test was 45. It increased to 70 in the post-test cycle 2. In addition, the animated video is able to improve the students’ speaking skill especially in using grammar, using the appropriate vocabulary, and pronouncing the words correctly. Through animated videos, students have a much chance to practice the speaking. It encourages students to speak and by practicing more they can speak fluently and understand the grammar well. The animated videos is also able to improve the students’ motivation during teaching and learning speaking. For example through animated videos media the students are interested in joining the teaching and learning speaking process due to the use of interesting, attractive and creative animation. The students participate in class actively. They are happy and enjoy the activities. The students are more active in asking and answering the questions and the class is alive. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of animated videos in teaching speaking can improve students’ speaking skills and motivation.
