A Translation Analysis of Idiomatic Expressions in Stephenie Meyer’s Novel New Moon

× This research focuses on the analysis of the strategies used by the translator in translating the idiomatic expressions and the quality of translation of idiomatic expressions in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. It identifies the semi-clause and full clause idioms in Stephenie Meyer’s novel New Moon. The research belongs to descriptive research using qualitative and quantitative method. The source of data of this research is the novel written by Stephenie Meyer entitled ‘New Moon’ and its translation entitled ‘Dua Cinta’ translated by Monica Dwi Chresnayani. The data gained by the researcher are all semi-clause idioms and full clause idioms found in the novel and the information taken from the questionnaires assessed by raters and respondents. This research used total sampling technique since the data, semi-clause idioms and full clause idioms, gained from New Moon novel are analyzed. The result of the analysis is that there are 5 strategies used by the translator in translating the idiomatic expressions. The strategies are: translation by using an idiom of similar meaning and form (3 idiom translations or 4.1%), translation by using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (5 idiom translations or 6.7%), translation by paraphrase (47 idiom translations or 63.5%), literal translation (6 idiom translations or 8.1%), and translation by using metaphor (13 idiom translations or 17.6%) The strategy of translation by using an idiom of similar meaning and form results: 3 (100%) accurate translations; 1 (33.3%) acceptable translation and 2 (66.7%) less acceptable translations; 2 (66.7%) readable translations and 1 (33.3%) less readable translation. The strategy of translation by using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form results: 5 (100%) accurate translations; 5 (100%) acceptable translations; and 5 (100%) less readable translations. The strategy of translation by paraphrase results: 37 (78.7%) accurate translations and 10 (21.3%) less accurate translations; 38 (80.9%) acceptable translations and 9 (19.1%) less acceptable translations; 8 (17.0%) readable translations and 39 (83.0%) less readable translations. The strategy of literal translation results: 6 (100%) less accurate translations; 4 (66.7%) acceptable translations and 2 (33.3%) less acceptable translations; and 6 (100%) less readable translations. The strategy of translation by using metaphor results: 8 (61.5%) accurate translations and 5 (38.5%) less accurate translations; 11 (84.6%) acceptable translations and 2 (15.4%) less acceptable translations; 1 (7.7%) readable translation and 12 (92.3%) less readable translations.
