× This thesis is aimed at identifying whether card sort can improve students’ reading comprehension or not and describing the strengths and weaknesses of using card sort to teach reading comprehension. The preliminary research showed that the students had problems on main idea, specific information or details, word meaning, generic structure, and communicative purpose. The research was done in SMP Negeri 3 Purwodadi from November 2010-March 2011. The subject of the study was the students of 8C of SMP Negeri 3 Purwodadi consisting of 34 students. It was a classroom action research. The researcher did some steps for each cycle. They were planning, action, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the researcher applied several techniques including observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. It compared between the scores mean of pre test (before implementing card sort) and post test (after implementing card sort), while the qualitative data were analyzed by using constant comparative method which consist of: comparing incidents applicable to each category, integrating categories into their properties, delimiting theory, and writing theory. The result of the research shows that: (1) card sort can improve students’ reading comprehension, which covers: main idea, detail, word meaning, generic structure, and communicative purpose. The improvement can be seen from their results of post test. The means of the scores improve from cycle to cycle; (2) card sort can improve students’ self-confidence and motivation in reading class. Besides, card sort can create conducive situation in class. Furthermore, the class becomes active and alive Moreover, the students can collaborate with the others well. This technique also motivates the students to be more autonomous and relaxed in giving and sharing their different opinions or suggestions to other group. Card sort can reduce the dominancy of the teacher. Most of the activity in the class is dominated by the students’ role. In conclusion, card sort is able to improve students’ reading comprehension. It stimulates students to be autonomous and active readers. This technique is mostly useful for the students. In short, it is recommended that the English teachers use card sort in teaching reading comprehension, so that it can be students’ own reading strategy in order to improve their reading comprehension.
