An Analysis Of Advices As Politeness In The Movie Entitled “Confession Of A Shopaholic” (A Socio-Pragmatics Study)

× This research focuses on Advices used by characters in the film entitled “Confession of a Shopaholic”. This research was conducted to know about the types of politeness strategy employed by characters in the movie entitled Confession of a Shopaholic. It is also carried out to explain some aspects that influence the characters to use certain strategies to employ advices and to describe the response of the hearers toward the advices in the movie. This research applied a socio-pragmatics approach with advice as the topic of analysis. This research is a descriptive qualitative research that takes purposive sampling technique. The data of this research are dialogues in the film that contain advice. The data were analyzed with Brown and Levinson Theory of Politeness, the theory of social dimensions of communication by Janet Holmes, and also Tsui‟s theory of responding act. Based on the data analysis, the researcher draws conclusions as follows:First, there are three types of Politeness Strategies applied by the characters in the movie entitled Confession of a Shopaholic to employ advice, they are : bald on record, positive politeness and negative politeness. Second, there are two aspects that influence the characters to use certain strategy to employ advice, they are the relationship between the speaker and the hearer and the social status of the speaker and the hearer. Third, there are two responses employed by the hearer toward the advice, they are: compliance response and non-compliance response. Based on the conclusions above, the researcher hopes that this research will give contribution to the readers in studying advice speech act dealing with politeness. It is also suggested to other researchers to analyze the same topic in other resources.
