× This research is aimed at identifying: (1) whether and to what extent electronic materials can improve students’ reading comprehension; and (2) what is the class situation when electronic materials are applied in reading comprehension class. This research was carried out at SMPN 1 Kendal, Ngawi, from August 2010 up to June 2011. The subject of the research was the students of class VIIIH of SMPN 1 Kendal, Ngawi, in the academic year of 2010/2011. The research method was Classroom Action Research and it was conducted in two cycles. In collecting the data, the researcher used interviews, observation field note, questionnaire, researcher’s diary, and test. Having collected the data, the researcher analyzed the qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed by using Constant Comparative Method: comparing incident applicable to each category, integrating categories and their properties, delimiting the theory, and writing the theory. The quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics to calculate the mean scores of the pre-test, the test in Cycle 1, and the post-test. The finding of the research shows that electronic materials can improve: (1) student’ reading comprehension: (a) students were able to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words; (b) students were able to find detailed information; (c) students were able to determine pronoun reference; (d) students were able to find out main ideas; and (e) students were able to infer implicit information in texts. The improvement can be seen from the students’ score in pre-test, test in Cycle 1, and post test. The mean of the pre-test score was 52.80; the mean score of the test in Cycle 1 was 63.63; and the mean of the post-test score was 76.63. The minimum passing score is 65.00; and (2) the class situation: (a) the students’ were more ready to follow the class; (b) the students paid attention to the materials more; (c) the use of electronic materials motivated the students better; (d) teacher did not dominate the class and gave more opportunity to the students to discuss so the class was less monotonous; and (e) the class was less noisy. The research showed that there is improvement in students’ reading comprehension and class situation. It can be stated that by optimizing the use of electronic materials, the reading class is more effective, innovative, and interesting. Therefore, it is recommended that the English teachers should (1) improve their teaching by implementing electronic materials in the three stages of the teaching or reading: pre, whilst, and post reading activities; and (2) select materials and visual aids precisely in order to meet the students’ need and level. This helps students to be more interested in the materials and be able to avoid boredom.
