Abstrak : This research is a classroom action research. The objectives of this study are to find out whether or not and to what extent storytelling can improve the students’ speaking skill and to describe the teaching learning process when storytelling is applied in teaching speaking. The problem highlighted in the research is the low level of students’ speaking skill at the first grade of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak Boyolali in the academic year of 2010/2011. The problem is indicated by two kinds of perspective. First, it is related to language, and second, the situation of the students in the teaching learning activity. The source of problems is indicated by three kinds of perspective. They are students, teacher and media. This research was carried out in class X.6. The procedure of the research consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In this study, the writer was the practitioner who implemented the storytelling technique in teaching learning process. The data are in the form of qualitative and quantitative. The quantitative data were taken from the test conducted before and after the actions were implemented. The qualitative data were taken from the result of observation while the actions were being carried out. Based on the analysis of data, the writer finds that Storytelling technique can improve students’ speaking skill. It can be seen from students’ performance during teaching and learning process. Students became more active and all students were involved in teaching learning process. It created better circumstance. Students were more enthusiastic in joining the lesson, so the class became more alive. Furthermore, there was also improvement in students’ achievement. The mean score in pre-test 4.12 increased to 6.02 in post-test 2. Thus, the result of the research shows that Storytelling technique can improve students’ speaking skill in order to become one of the appropriate techniques in teaching speaking. Practically, storytelling is one of the appropriate techniques to improve students’ speaking skill in order to be active learners. It is indicated that students learn best when they are personally involved in the teaching learning process. Through Storytelling technique, the students can share ideas, information, or opinion to the other friends based on the story. The environment will not be threatening so that the learners are eager to communicate. Teaching speaking through storytelling also provides an opportunity to develop accuracy, fluency and keep the learners highly motivated.
