||The aim of this research is to show how YouTube video is used to improve
the students’ speaking mastery. The objective of this research are: First, to know
the effectiveness of using YouTube video in teaching speaking. Second, the study
is conducted to find out how far YouTube video improves students speaking skill.
Third, the study is conducted to find out what happens when YouTube video is
used to improve teaching speaking. Then, all the objectives lead to the main
objective of the study that is to improve the students’ speaking skill.
The writer conducted a classroom action research from May to June 2011
at class X SMA N 1 Boyolali. She conducted 2 cycles of action. Each cycle
consists of four steps: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In
collecting the qualitative data the writer used observational techniques. Consisting
of observation, field notes, photographs, interview, questionnaires, and
documents. The quantitative data were gotten from the test. The technique of
analyzing the qualitative data was constant comparative method and integrating
The result of the research shows that (1) the students’ speaking skill had
been improved after the implementation of YouTube video to teach speaking. It is
proved by the improvement of the students’ speaking score from 65.4 to 78.6; and
(2) after using YouTube video the students are motivated in learning speaking and
they are eager to join all speaking activities. Based on the research findings, the
writer concludes that YouTube video is effective to teach speaking.
Based on the result of the research, the writer suggests that the teacher
should be creative in teaching speaking by giving related material through
YouTube video to attract the students’ attention so that the students’ speaking
