The objectives of the research are to know the extent of the improvement of students’ speaking skill through dialogue activities of the tenth year students of SMA N 1 Teras, Boyolali of the academic year 2010/2011 and to identify the situation when dialogues are implemented in the speaking class of the tenth year students of SMA N 1 Teras, Boyolali of the academic year 2010/2011. The method used in this research is classroom action research. The research was conducted in two cycles from March 4th to July 1st 2011 to the tenth year students of SMA N 1 Teras, Boyolali. The subject of the research was the students of X1 consisted of 33 students, 19 girls and 14 boys. The research data were collected by using techniques of observational and non observational techniques. The observational techniques are collected from observation, research diary, field note and photograph. The non observational techniques are collected from interview, speaking test, students’ diaries, and questionnaires. The data are analyzed through qualitative and quantitative data analyses which include: re-reading the research diary, pre-research observation report, field note and pre-test and post-test. The research finding proves that dialogue is an effective approach in teaching speaking to improve the students’ speaking skill. The research findings include: (1) dialogue can improve the students’ speaking skill, in the terms of: (a) improving the students’ accuracy, (b) improving the students’ fluency, and (c) improving the students’ vocabulary. (2) dialogue can improve the teaching learning process, in the terms of: (a) improving the classroom atmosphere, (b) improving the students’ involvement, (c) improving the students’ self-confidence, (d) improving the students’ ability in solving the problems, and (e) improving the students’ motivation and interest. The researcher hopes that: (1) this research finding can improve the quality of teaching and learning process especially in teaching speaking; (2) this research can enrich the knowledge and experience for other researchers and readers.
